I heard the bells on Christmas daySunday, December 26, 2010
Colossians 3:15-16 On Christmas Eve I heard two homilies. At Vineyard Daniel Goulet caught a phrase, "Let God interrupt your life." Joseph and Mary did just that. He has a great and perfect plan for me. Me? Boy interrupted. As midnight drew near I was at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Urbana. Children stretched out asleep on the pew in front of me. Candles burned all over the church. Father Joe spoke passionately about the incarnation. It's "an example of what Jesus wants to do with you and me." He talked of longing for complete mingling with God. God loves us so so much, he said. God longs to be one with us. Outside, snow fell all afternoon and evening. Several inches blanketed every rooftop, every car, every corner of every street. My shoes crunched on the snow when I walked to my car. For the fourth time on Christmas Eve, I brushed snow off the windows. It was so very quiet at midnight. A few bells, a few voices. In the dark streets shineth the everlasting light. Music filled up the car. Noel at the Monastery. Beautiful music from the monks. Only a few blocks home. Let the peace of God rule in my heart. Let the word of Christ dwell in me richly. And also with you. Such a joy, Lord, to spend the next few days celebrating your birthday. What a party! The Kingdom of God is a party. You are a wonderful host; thank you for inviting us in. |
