Mary's ride

Sunday, December 12, 2010

James 5:7
Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord.

We are a little nervous about going very far from home this morning, in the car and certainly on foot. The weather forecast draws Margaret and I into a cocoon of warm beside the window, watching snow blow.

Joseph got the letter from the Roman Census Bureau; we want to get to know you better! Or at least count you accurately. Come to Bethlehem. Come now! He couldn't ignore this, so he and Mary had to travel. Nearly 80 miles. (Although, according to Google maps, you can't get there from there.)

Was it a morning like this? Cold, really windy, snow-in-the-face? That donkey you always see Mary riding, how did the donkey like the weather? What is Aramaic for "Giddy-up!"?

God is about to blow the doors off all our paradigms and show up in person on the earth. Mary does have some clue to all this, having been in the presence of Gabriel. But on a cold winter day, it feels so good to just sit by the fire and forget all that.

Caesar wouldn't let her. They traveled. On the shoulders of her donkey, she had the chance to be patient and quiet. Waiting for the coming of the Lord.

Listening to the warm - I hear crackling fire, I hear water boiling for cocoa, I hear whispers of Jesus about to be born, "I love you, I love you, I love you."

Come, Lord Jesus. Let your gentleness be evident to all.
