Isaiah 40:9-10 Japanese, German and American imperialists touched the muscles of God's strong arm and felt powerful. That power devastated Nagasaki and Hiroshima, London and Dresden, Manhattan in 2001, Baghdad and now Kandahar. There is no end to the death. Jesus has a different take on God's intentions toward evil: "If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray" (Matthew 18:12)? Very time-consuming, this kind of righteousness. Easier to send a bomber. Compassion and acceptance require much more from the giver than the receiver. He might die. She might die. I might die. But this kind of death fertilizes the earth. Spring comes. Life grows up and up and up. God, just how much bigger than me are you? I can only see so much, and You are so much more. Whatever glimpses I have of Your Logic, and Your Love, are as good as it gets. Keep my eyes open. |
