John 5:6-9 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am on my way, someone else gets down there before me."
Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your mat and walk." Immediately the man became well, took up his mat, and walked. Now that day was a Sabbath.
Then the rain let up and the sun came up On the school bus we played rock, paper, scissors. The paper covered the rock, the scissors cut the paper, the rock broke the scissors. Jesus might have been stoned for his good deed, of course, because it was done on the Sabbath. Healing is hard work. And of course being healed is hard work too. Can you do that kind of thing on the Day of Rest? Jesus didn't need the waters to heal this man, but he did need his "yes." "Yes, I want to be healed." The man had not succumbed to despair, and he was not afraid to trust his healing with someone he'd never met. I think Jesus cared more about this man himself than the message he would be sending to the Pharisees. As they looked each other in the eyes, Jesus loved him. Now this man can walk the earth. He can jump into the water whenever he wants. He can brace himself against a strong wind and stay standing. And he knows the fire of the Holy Spirit inside him. Jesus loved him. Praise you, Lord. When you touch me, nothing else matters. With your hand on my head I know only your presence. Sweet Jesus making me. Whole. |
