Mary's song

Luke 1:46-56
Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord ..."

A lot of Christmas is about Mary. Jesus' mother seems to glide through the annunciation, her pregnancy, childbirth in a stable, and the beginning of life together with her young boy Jesus. A recent movie, The Nativity Story, draws out some other possibilities, as in her mother acting the more traditional Jewish mother-part, wringing her hands and skeptical of anything she can't touch, as in a Nazarene mob trying to stone her before Joseph rescues her. But in that film as well, Mary rises above it all.

I think she probably did. It does one good to meet with Gabriel. A good talking-to from the arch-angel stays with you. It stayed with Mary. As she traveled to meet her Auntie Liz and heard her awestruck greeting, Mary's conviction grew. And then she sang:

Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior, for he has looked upon his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, and has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever."

Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months and then returned to her home.

Lord, when you speak, it comes to be. When you command, the plans and purposes of your heart stand firm forever. Your eyes rest on those who fear you, on those whose hope is in your unfailing love. Let your eyes rest on us, Lord. We put our hope in you.
