Two babies

Monday, December 21, 2009

Luke 1:39-45
Mary set out in those days and traveled to the hill country in haste ...

Of course she was excited. Do you think she was scared? When she told her mother she was pregnant (she must have told her mother!?) what kind of reception did she get? Like many another pregnant girl she left town in a hurry.

But her Auntie Elizabeth's greeting was the opposite of the townspeoples' rejection. She greeted Mary from the inside out, the baby inside her awakened and alert. Elizabeth knew her baby was a miracle child, sent by God directly to her and Zechariah for a very specific purpose. And her baby knew something special about Mary.

Elizabeth greets Mary with wonder and joy. In deep humility she speaks a blessing over her niece, and rejoices in the future that is suddenly so bright. Within the wombs of these two women, the babies who already seem so connected continue to grow in silence and warmth and darkness.

The light is coming soon.

Mary set out in those days and traveled to the hill country in haste ... to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, "Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."

Lord, we will sing to you a new song with shouts of gladness, for your plan stands forever, the design of your heart, through all generations. You are our help and our shield. We trust in you, Lord.
