Deuteronomy 4:1-9
"Be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them."
We drove around on another day and looked at it all. Our eyes saw what there was to see. Grandma Dot pointed out what was gone, what was deteriorating, what had been rebuilt. She remembered unpaved roads, general stores, school rooms and old cars. Cars that were new back then. And she remembered the people. The people from which our children, and our children's children, have come. I long for those stories. They are of great value, the folklore of my family. And I envy the Israelities their shared memories of God's life with them. Each touch of God to the fragments of dust he made into men brings me closer to him today. When I hear the story, I know it can also happen for me. I am not alone in the universe. God can whisper in my ear, He might touch my cheek or breathe within me anytime now. You provide everything, Lord. You cover the sky with clouds and supply the earth with rain and make grass grow on the hills. You provide food for the cattle and the birds. You say you will delight in me. I will put my hope in your unfailing love, O Lord. |
