John 14:12 And some of us humans have followed in those footsteps, although not very many of us at first glance. Is Jesus disappointed? There is no reason to think he was speaking tongue-in-cheek, or that he was saying something obliquely. He meant what he said. His disciples then, and his disciples now, are being asked to be faithful and expect miracles to happen daily. God expects me to become a clear conduit through which he can act and speak in the world. He does the same thing, so to speak, through plants and animals everyday, because they do not work at cross purposes against him or speak with their own voices. Jesus as the ultimate model for humanity shows me the potential of my ability to let God work through me as do the plants and animals. Over and over he tells me to stop my own efforts and let God work, and here he hints of what happens when I do that. Lord, make my relationship with you the source of great expectations. Work your will and bring life to the world through me. Let me be silent until I hear you; and when I do, speak words of truth and clarity through me. |
