Romans 13:11
Brothers and sisters, you know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

It isn't all bad to wake up in the middle of the night. I might be alone, but this can be the Alone in the Dark of My Mother's Womb. I was there once; why not again?

I'm closest to God in silence, and night brings the deepest silence. God is right there. Reach out and touch.

So sometimes the woken-up broken-up sleep-deprived black night really does turn velvet, and I hear whispers of love and presence instead of scratchy scary static. Listen. Listen with more than just your ears. Stretch out and listen.

For years Jesus has been teaching Paul to see life God's way, through the lens of love. Life is good because God is good. Paul learns slowly, but he learns. His salvation "is nearer now than when we first believed." Mine too? In the middle of the velvet black at 3 a.m., I either know that or I don't.

Show me ... shower me, Lord with love, and then fill your love in me with knowledge and depth of understanding. Let me discern your presence when I can't see, or hear, or believe. Put your hand on the top of my head, and let me close my eyes in peace.
